I don’t know. Maybe it was seeing another Wizard go bad. Maybe it was that my daughter was heading back to the Fey City. Maybe it was because Bestovius was back and calling himself Alistair. I just couldn’t concentrate on what was going on around me after the tower. We learned how to open doors with a statue, fought some large crab, and crossed a river. After that, I felt more myself. I was still about as effective, however.
We must have traveled pretty far down the tower because we came out where the sea encroached under the cliff face. Oh yea, and pirates were there with a couple of boats. Our group, now the finely tuned fighting machines we were, (or at least with the finely tuned fighting machine that can breath lightning and take a few hits) could take out the pirates handily. This brought great pleasure to those that had been captured by pirates before, as these also worked for Captain Harcourt. We learned this because two pirates actually surrendered. More surprisingly no one killed them.
In the boats we discovered two chests and two breasts, the latter belonging to a human prisoner named Lemunda. After quite a bit of discussion, we ultimately decided to turn the pirates in to the watch, and escort the girl to her father, Lemual the trader. He gave us some coin in thanks and we decided since we could stay in real beds, we might as well rest, shop, and buy arrows.
When we got back, the tower was still there. Alastair burst right through the dusty room that had previously had skeletons, forgetting that we wanted to see if any new traffic had come through there, I guess because we told Bestovius. We burst into a very large room to not be surprised by a group of 8 – 10 goblins. These were not mamby pamby goblins like all the stories of years (editions) gone by. These were 20 point just to bloody, javelin throwin’, crossbow shootin’, tactics using, stealth behind table, run when things get bad, goblins. Again our group made some tactical mistakes as we all get used to each other, but we are starting to be a more cohesive team. Everyone seems to have each others back, and when a man goes down, we all (Kelvonis especially) rally to get that member up and back in the fight. The goblins were eventually dropped like the monsters they are before any could escape and get reinforcements or warnings out.
As we’d just came back in the tower, everyone was itching to continue on. As we entered a door a large leaping spider pounced on Alistare. It poisoned, and webbed him and leaped, yea leaped FAR, across the room. Shorty and Kelvonis bravely ran up and kept attacking in the wrong order for Shorty to gain his backstabbing. Karazhan and I bravely stayed far away and pelted arrows and Magic missles near it, careful to not actually do any damage. Suddenly the creature bloodied and fucking pounced again, next to me. I bravely Fey Stepped away as our front line reformed around the beast. Karazhan became convinced no more spider were waiting to pounce, used an evasive strike, missed, but NO, his tricky elven accurate evasive strike was indeed true to its mark and banked of the wall to strike the spider in a critical location and felled it.
Many other heroic deeds and moments occurred throughout the last few days. Everyone has had their moments, even that brother of mine that the monsters he hits never seam to retaliate to (almost like they don’t see him anymore.) I suppose when I look back over this time in my life when I am older and wiser, I will fondly think of them as LEVEL 1.
Maybe I’ll include the next encounter or two until I take a longer break.

We regrouped after the fight with the spider. Velindar and Karazhan went off their own way to get to know each other, but told us the way to go to find the last section of the tower that we didn’t explore. We explored it. We came to a room filled with some caskets. We started opening them, and found a ring, rusty chainmail, a flaming skeleton, a broach, and an animated dagger and a magic longsword. We kept some things, fought and killed one, fought and not killed one, and left one. I’ll let you figure which is which.
At that point the tower seemed void of any other threat to us or the city of Sanction and with a quick couple hours to double check the other levels on our way out, we left.
I sat down to read the Wizard’s ritual book and figure out what the hell he was doing in that tower. After a few days I was able to use my Insight and Arcane abilities to basically learn the following.
The tower connects to the shadowfel. This guy tried to figure out why, or if there’s a pattern or WTF. He could not find a pattern but figured out it goes through stages of Active or Dorment. It is currently Active. He could not figure out why. He went crazy.
While I was doing that my new pal, Kelvonis tracked down a guy that would share the Endure Elements ritual with me for a fair price. Alistair, Kelvonis and Shorty all chipped in on the price too since it could help us all somewhere down the line. That showed a degree of commitment from everyone that they have interest in continuing to work together. Encouraging.
While discussing our next move, we were approached by a Tiefling of the watch named Vester. Kelvonis had heard of him and said he was a straight shooter but perhaps a bit harsh or brutal about his job. He offered us work as part of the flying watch. We conferred with each other and thought this was a good step for us, however Alistair felt uneasy about blindly throwing in his allegiance with someone after he had just escaped captivity. We decided he should make of show of his disagreement and leave the building while the other three of us, myself Bozcov, Kaelvonis and Shorty became actual badge carrying deputies of the watch, with a writ of approval and everything. Our first charge being to figure out why the hell the pirates gave a rat’s ass about the merchant daughter, Lemunda, that we had rescued from them.
We met up with Alistair because he’s still, of course, working with us, just not in an “official” capacity, and decided that I would investigate any problems that the father, Lemual the Trader had with the law or other records of interest to see if the kidnapping was revenge based. I searched the records as well as I could and found information on him, but not anything that would explain a Pirate’s interest in kidnapping his daughter.
The rest of the group would shake things up in the seedier sections and see what they could find out. They had little luck. Actually very little luck. This turned out to be the theme of our first investigation. Very. Little. Luck.
We proceeded to talk to Lemual and find out what he knew about things. He know nothing. We talked to Lemunda herself. She knew nothing of the pirates, but through shrewd diplomacy we did learn that they talked dirty to her. We also learned that she was betrothed to Lord Aldred, the 3rd son of Lord Amilric and Lady Denay. Apparently the Oldest Sibling, his sister Anwin and the youngest sister Anerra were not entirely pleased that Alred had selected a mere commoner to wed. Plus they were probably jealous that Lemunda was hotter than them. Aldred’s older brothers, Sir Aaron (the eldest son) and Arthur were not quite as outspoken but none the less still suspects in our book. We thought perhaps we had the lead we needed or a motive. If a rich family was involved instead of just a merchant family, that could help explain the pirates interest.
We went back to the docks to rough up or join or interrogate pirates. We really weren’t a hundred percent clear, but that never really mattered. Read above at very little luck. We just could not get our act together as a group and failed to find out anything.
We had Lemunda set up a meeting with Lord Aldred. Figured maybe we could get him worried about the pirates and that would shed some light on things. But again, we failed to earn his trust and gain knowledge. Kelvonis was as diplomatic as he could be, but our group could not get him to give us any information to further our investigation.
Our group now returns to our inn, where I now sit. We are all a bit downtrodden as we all brainstorm for “ideas for where to go next…”
