Hey guys! Just starting using the boards. Didn't even realize this had been set up for the game i'm currently running.
I've fallen in love with the Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay system thanks to the Derek's current Rogue Trader campaign. I'm considering trying to make a home-brew ruleset for using the same system for an Iron Kingdom campaign.
The 40k RP books are based around certain core story elements which can be built upon; an inquisitor's retinue, a rogue trader's crew, a squad of space marines. For this conversion I think I would do the same and set the characters as the high ranking members or leaders of a small mercenary group.
So, Im starting an outline and the next thing to decide on is classes. The dark heresy book provides 8 career paths to choose from and I'd like to match that. So, what major arch-types would you use for the career paths. Remember that career paths branch out as a character progresses and they must choose a specialization, thus multiple similar classes could be combined into a single career path and be offered as different specializations.
Just for reference the DH career paths are Adept, Arbitrator, Assassin, Cleric, Guardsmen, Imperial Psyker, Scum, and Tech-Priest.

If you really like the 40k system, I'd suggest you check out Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay from Black Industries (aka WFRP 2nd Edition). It's now out of print, and the books are pretty expensive, but I'm sure you can find some PDFs somewhere.
WFRP 2nd Edition is the system that the system used in the FFG 40k games is based on (confusingly enough, Fantasy Flight Games, which publishes the 40k books you are referring to uses a completely different system for its own version of WFRP). It is a fantasy system, set in a pseudo-late medieval/early renaissance world. With guns. And dangerous magic. No rules for mechs, though.

Welcome to the boards Nate! Dave has made a pretty solid suggestion on the WFRP books that should be an easier conversion than the Fantasy Flight 40k version.
I've got most if not all of the PDFs for the Fantasy version if you'd like them.

So i looked over the warhammer fantasy roleplay rules. The career system seems really fun and well done which is a big plus. However, one major issue I see is that, unlike wh40k roleplay, characters dont get reactions and thus cant parry or dodge without forfeiting some of their action on their own turn. Considering this system is just as lethal as wh40k roleplay, the inability to dodge/parry seems like a pretty serious flaw.
