I liked Avengers. But I didn't think it was great. But on the other other hand, I think part of that might be how hyped it was. I initially thought the first Iron Man was ok - then realized just how much fun it was after watching it a second time, and just letting myself relax, take the movie for what it was, and get swept along. I suspect Avengers will be the same - except now that I expect that, those very expectations may thwart my enjoyment.
Anyhow.
I went to see MiBIII this week (I've got some time off from work). It was - ok. It had some bits that were amusing, but it just seemed a little old and creaky [insert Will Smith aging/Tommy Lee Jones is actually dead jokes here].
I also rented the most recent 3 Musketeers. The clockpunk elements seemed a bit OTT, and the way the Milady sub-plot was resolved seemed a bit grim and gritty for the tone of the rest of the movie, but overall, I enjoyed it. It was, for the most part, a good old-fashioned swashbuckler. With lots of practical effects and actual stunt-work and real fake sword-fighting (I mean actual actors and stuntmen actually performing the moves, without quick-cuts,shaky cam, and extreme close-ups to obscure what's actually happening). It also had a good bit of CGI, but it was really well-blended, to the point where it was rarely if ever obvious where the set and practical effects left off and the CGI began, even in scenes (like the airship fight) where it was obvious they had to be using a lot of CGI.
BTW, in the category of "movies based on RPGs that don't realize they're based on RPGs", if you combine this movie with the Pirates of the Caribbean series, you've got an excellent idea of what the RPG 7th Sea is supposed to be. Which now has me really jonesing to run 7th Sea. Except I'm already running an M&M3E campaign and a SWD dungeon fantasy campaign. So many potential campaigns, so little time...

I saw 3 musketeers in the theater, and also enjoyed it. It was just fun (just don't take it too seriously or think about it too much.) I actually liked the mission impossible style opening and introductions to the characters.
It also made me want to run/play in a campaign as you described. I always thought the Pirates of the Caribbean world they created, was so ripe for exploring.
MIB3...without me.
