I know gaming is a refuge for many of us right now, and I don't want to clutter up one our refuges with more real-life, but this site also seems like a good hub for general communication among our extended group.
So, how's everyone doing?
My life right now is a little odd, but odd in a different way than most peoples'. I'm still working, and my day to day routine is still largely the same.
For those of you that don't know, I work in the logistics division of a major lab company. We're having trouble keeping up with the demand for COVID-19 testing, but our overall volume is way down, with non-essential tests and procedures being postponed, deferred, or canceled. My company has announced the first round of furloughs; my office was passed over, but other offices in my division have had furloughs.
Right now, I'm at least feeling financially pretty secure. Of course, everything could change tomorrow, but my company's furlough policy right now has good terms. It's a one-week notice to the furloughed worker, then 8 - 12 weeks of unpaid furlough, but the worker retains benefits, critically including health insurance, and will be re-hired back into the same position and retain seniority. With the current unemployment benefit rules and the $600 federal "kicker", I'd actually be making more money if I get furloughed. We've actually had a couple of guys in my office ask to be furloughed.
I'm out and about, but my contact with other people is still fairly limited. We've asked all of our clients to put their specimens in outside lockboxes as much as practical, so even when I'm out, I'm mostly just in my own car and not having face-to-face contact with anyone.
How's everyone else doing?
