I went to be last night around 10pm. Weather alerts on my phone were going off every 10-15 minutes, so I set it to airplane mode so it wouldn't interrupt my sleep. Wishful thinking.
I cranked up my window a/c unit and my fan, for cooling and white noise. Probably around 11 or 12, the power started fluctuating. Off for a few seconds, then on for a couple of minutes, then off for a few seconds, and so on. Waking me up every time. Finally, the power went off and stayed off. No A/C. No fan. Just the hurricane winds howling out side an increasingly hot bedroom. Very little sleep.
I finally got up for good a little after 6 am. No power means no a/c and since I'm on a well, no running water. Hot and sweaty and no shower. I decided to head into work early. There'll be running water, flush toilets, and hopefully power and A/C. I thought I might even be able to take a nap in an office before work.
I got into work and...half the power circuits in the building were down. Including the circuit that controls the HVAC unit. So no A/C. Also, no internet, which we need to work. I futzed around with plugs by trial and error, and managed to get the modem, router, computer, and printer plugged into working sockets. The cable modem wasn't online though. Apparently Spectrum had major outages all day. We have a cellular modem as a back-up, which I got working. So, I now had a computer, a phone, flushing toilets...but no A/C. And the flushing toilet was in a room which didn't have power.
I spent the day scrambling to coordinate revamped routes and keep up with client late openings and closings, in between which I just sat and sweltered. The building where I work has no windows. There's just one door I can open to air out my work area, so no air circulation. And no A/C.
I finally got home a little before 5 pm. I was hesitantly optimistic - the power outage map had my area at only 7% outage. Opened my door and...A/C. Cool, cool, A/C. Checked the taps, and water was running. I turned on the shower and...cool water. I was concerned my hot water heater had fritzed out due to the outage, but let it run a few minutes, and...hot water. Hot shower. Now sitting in the A/C, posting this (so internet as well).
Life is good.
P.S. Remind me to tell you the Tragic Tale of the Window A/C Unit Frog sometime.
