GEOGRAPHY OF BAROS
The Kingdom of Baros is filled with a variety of geographical features. The major features are listed below:
Moradin’s Beard
This large mountain range is located on the western edge of the kingdom. Within this mountain range lies the famed Ironforge Hall – the ancient home of the Slammerhammer Clan of dwarves. Moradin’s Beard is home to all manner of beasts and evil humanoids as it is riddled with massive cave complexes and natural tunnels.
Melora’s Wood
Melora’s Wood is a small patch of woods located to the south of Moradin’s Beard. The area was once ruled by a nasty hobgoblin tribe called the Blacktooth Seekers, but an Eladrin druid named Illustrialla cleared them out with the help of numerous animal companions and allies. She still lives in the woods and is seen only occasionally. She is considered a hero for what she has done but her reclusive ways don’t sit well with most folks so she is usually left alone when she is spotted.
Melora’s Waters
Melora’s Waters gets its name from the weather patterns that plague its waters. Many feel that Melora’s will determines whether someone sails safely through the waters or faces storms that destroy their vessel.
The Tooth
This small island became the home of those awaiting trial when the Council of Elders decided to build Stonegate Prison on it. A dedicated portal was constructed that linked Stonegate and Turingham. The prison is magically guarded and no one has ever escaped and lived – though many have tried. The prison is run by a sect of ancient warforged known as The Keepers.
Trollfinger Fens
The Trollfinger Fens are known not only for the bog trolls that inhabit it but also for the lizardfolk tribe known as the Cult of the Fang. The only reason anyone ever goes into the fens is to search for Gemstones as they are plentiful within the marshes.
Forsaken Wood
The Forsaken Wood is a small patch of forest but it is considered one of the most dangerous places in the kingdom. Many beasts and aberrations have come and gone through the wood and rumor has it that there is a portal to the Feydark or possibly the Far Realm located somewhere within its borders.
Haley’s Marsh
This stretch of swamp was once known as the Horntoad Marsh but all that changed one fateful day. The marsh now gets its name from the lost daughter of Baros’ leading noble family – the Windsors. Over seventy years ago, young Haley Windsor got lost in the marsh and never returned. For years, the family paid for groups of adventurers to search the swamp but she was never found and the marsh has been known as Haley’s ever since.
The Feywood
The Feywood is located south of Baros between Turingham and the Great Lake. Many years ago it was one large stretch of forest but as humans continued to populate the region, they cut their way through to create a trade way joining Riverton to the southern lands. Both portions retained the name but some refer to them as the Northern and Southern Feywood. The Feywood is the home of the eladrin people and they protect it from further aggression. The eladrin are not hostile towards humans but they stop visitors at the woods’ edge and turn them away. Only a select few have been more than a few hundred yards inside so there are not many reliable tales to tell – only rumors. One such rumor states that there is a portal to the Feywild located somewhere within.
The Windtorn Hills
The Windtorn Hills get their name from the breezes that shoot over them constantly. The Windtorn Hills are relatively tame due to the Golden Griffonriders that regularly patrol the skies above the southern edge of the kingdom. The Griffonriders are based somewhere in the hills but the location is a secret. The Golden Griffonriders were formed to be the first line of defense should Durtaxis the Red decide to attack the kingdom. Since their inception over a century ago, they have battled Durtaxis only once...it took many years for the Griffonriders to recover their losses.
The Great Lake
The Great Lake is the largest body of water in the land and it is the location of almost all of the fishing that is done in the kingdom. The town of Lakewood exists in order to keep the fishing industry alive. The lake is extremely deep and no one has ever gone to its bottom and returned. Some say that there is an ancient civilization down there that does not want to be found while others speak of a gargantuan creature that calls the bottom its home.
The Oldenwood
This ancient stretch of woods is home to many monstrous races and the black dragon Mystakkattallon. It is not a safe place for travelers but it is not a source of invaders. No one really knows what keeps its normally aggressive inhabitants from attacking those beyond its borders.
Cypher’s Wood
These woods get their name from the green dragon known as Cypher. She is a vicious and evil dragon that has become the object of reverence from hordes of kobolds. Time after time kobold invaders claiming allegiance to the green wyrm attack those that live near her realm.
The Griffon Hills
The Griffon Hills get their name from the griffons that nest in the upper peaks. Though the griffons are not aggressive by nature, they defend their home from any who come near. A large cache of Gemstones has been found in these hills and this has brought fortune seekers to the area which only increases the chance of an encounter with these proud beasts.
The Great Baros Peaks
The Great Baros Peaks are located in the northeastern corner of the kingdom. The mountains are most famous for Titan’s Peak which is the location of the frozen fortress of a great frost giant jarl. The other claim to fame for this stretch of mountains is that it was the location for the last Great Gathering of the dragons of the realm.
