ARCANE BACKGROUND (KI MASTERY)
Requirements: Novice, Martial Artist
Arcane Skill: Focus (Spirit)
Starting Powers: 2
Ki Masters draw upon reserves of inner strength and their own life energy, or ki, to perform spectacular feats. Their powers take the form of katas, carefully detailed patterns of movement that allow the Ki Master to focus his ki.
A Ki Master may use his Spirit die rather than his Strength die when inflicting damage with an unarmed strike. He is also considered to be wielding two weapons when unarmed if it is to his advantage (as when defending against a character with the Florentine Edge, for example). He may also ignore the Rank Requirement for the Bruiser and Improved Martial Artist Edges.
MONK WEAPONS
Ki Masters often incorporate specialized weapons into their katas. Note that their damage is always Strength-based, unlike a Ki Master's unarmed strikes. The following weapons can be wielded by a Ki Master without being a sin: bo staffs (staffs), butterfly swords (short swords), jo sticks or escrima sticks (clubs), kamas (sickles), nunchaku (flails), shuriken (as thrown daggers, but can be drawn as a free action and count as a light improvised weapon when used as a hand weapon), and three-section-staffs or whipping chains (heavy flails).
ADEPT
Requirements: Novice, AB (Ki Mastery), Fighting d8+, Focus d8+
Adepts are Ki Masters who have trained themselves to achieve a unity of mind and body.
Upon taking this Edge and at each new Rank, they may choose one power with a range of Self to be activated as a free action. The Adept must have the power to begin with, and this does not allow him to activate more than one power in a round.
FLURRY OF BLOWS
Requirements: Novice, AB (Ki Mastery), Fighting d8+, Focus d6+
Ki Masters learn to use every part of their body as a weapon. A hero with this Edge may make two unarmed attacks at no penalty, as if wielding two weapons with the Ambidextrous and Two-Fisted Edges. He may also attack with a pair of the same "monk weapon" (i.e., a pair of jo sticks or a pair of kamas) at no penalty.

> Ascetic: The focus of the Ki Master depends on a reliance on his own spiritual strength. Any reliance on external, material things undermines this focus. Minor "sins" give the character a -2 to his Focus rolls for one week. Major sins rob him of all arcane powers for one week. Mortal sins cause the character to completely lose this focus and all access to ki powers until the penitent hero completes some great quest or task of atonement to regain his lost powers.
Minor sins include using a weapon in combat, arguing over material possessions, and seeking material rewards. Major sins include wearing armor in combat, physically fighting over material rewards, accumulating more material possessions than can be carried, and choosing physical comfort over spiritual enlightenment. Mortal sins include killing out of greed for material wealth.
> Powers: The following powers are available to Ki Masters with a range of Self: armor (iron skin), boost trait (harmony of mind and body), deflection (flowing like water), environmental protection (diamond body), fly (cloud walking), greater healing (timeless body), healing (wholeness of body), quickness (stillness of mind), smite (iron fist), speak language (tongue of the sun and moon), speed (leap of the clouds), succor (purity of body), teleport (abundant step), wall walker (light step), warrior's gift (battle mind).
The following powers are available to Ki Masters with a range of Touch (these count as Touch Attacks and must hit the opponent's Parry): blind (blinding touch, single target only), bolt (fists of fury), lower trait (quivering palm, single target only), pummel (one finger push, 1 Power Point/0 Casting Penalty, only affects a single target), stun (stunning fist, 1 Power Point/0 Casting Penalty, only affects a single target).
> Backlash: When using the No Power Points Setting Rule, a Ki Master suffers Backlash as normal, but the damage is reduced by half the Ki Master's Focus skill.
