I've played M&M 3E/DC Adventures before, but it's been a while, so I'm still trying to work the kinks out. Sorry.
The fight against the aliens probably shouldn't have been quite that tough.
I forgot an important rule: heroes can make attack rolls against minions as routine checks. That means you can "Take 10" to rather than rolling when attacking a minion. You can't crit, but if your attack bonus is at least equal to the minion's relevant, defense, you can't miss, either.
Also, in M&M3E/DCA, Accurate Attack (Damage for Attack Bonus), All-Out Attack (Defenses for Attack Bonus), and Power Attack (Attack Bonus for Damage) are all Combat Maneuvers. Anyone can exchange 1-2 points by using these maneuvers. The advantages of the same name are really "Improved Accurate Attack", etc. They allow you to exchange up to 5 points instead of just 2.
As a side note, Bastille's Damage rank 12 blasts were able to one-shot KO aliens who failed their Toughness save; when Bastille and Onyx went for a Damage rank 10 blast, those only Staggered the aliens. Anyone who can get a rank 12 Damage effect should probably try an attack as a routine check - if you succeed, you'll be plowing through aliens like Captain America through Hydra agents.
Despite/because of my mistake in not making sure new players new those rules, the result will probably reflect the source material rather well. Heroes usually have a tough time against a new enemy, only to come back and trounce larger numbers of the same foe in the next issue.
