Sister Gwenta hurridly ushers you into the Keep's Chapel, where she and Brother Cassoway perform a short ceremony to invoke the blessings of the gods. You all feel immediately refreshed.
Serjent Alain then calls you outside, and quickly escorts you into the Inner Bailey, where the Keep's forces are mustering.
"Our scouts and messages coming in from folk fleeing outlying homesteads are telling us that a horde of of orcs is descending out of the Troll Hills and heading straight for us. We don't know how many - in the hundreds at least, maybe over a thousand. There's also dozens of gnolls, and smaller forces of hill trolls and hill giants. Honestly, I don't think we have the forces here to defeat a force that size."
The serjent takes you up to Sir Majoris, the castellan, who is organizing the Keep's defenses.
Hands clasped behind his back, a grim look on his face, and fully armored, Sir Majoris turns to you.
"I must say I am glad to see you. The military situation, frankly, is dire. The Keep's garrison consists of a single company of cavalry and a company of infantry. We have also called up the Resten Village militia, which amounts to another company of light infantry. We face a force many times our size. The orc horde, the hill trolls, the hill giants - any one of those by itself might be too much. But together...Still, we shall persevere. This is our duty. To stand, and die, if needs be, in defense of the North March.
"I know you have made many expeditions into the Troll Hills, and are more familiar with the enemy than any of my own troops. Not to mention, the word of your deeds in facing down the minions of the Demon God of the Hunt has been reaching us for months. When Serjent Alain told me you had arrived, I immediately went to the garrison commander, Lord Caledon. He has agreed to follow your advice as to the disposition of our forces, and even to give you tactical command of individual units, should you desire it.
"The first decision, which must be made soon, is whether to go out to meet our foe or await him here at Northgard Keep. If we go out to meet the horde in the plains north of the Keep, and we leave soon, we can engage it in the daylight, when the light-sensitive orcs will be at a disadvantage, and we may be able to choose our terrain, as well. If we fortify the Keep, the horde will arrive here after nightfall, when our mostly human forces will be at a disadvantage. But, we will have Northgard Keep as a defensive bastion, which will give us a significant defensive advantage.
"What say you?"
