HEROES OF THE SWORD COAST: CHARACTER CREATION
For Heroes of the Sword Coast, use the standard character creation rules in the D&D Basic Rules or the D&D Player's Handbook, except as noted below.
Races
Humans must select the Feat Variant (+1 to two different ability scores, one bonus feat, and one bonus skill proficiency).
All of the races listed in the PHB can be found on the Sword Coast. As noted in the PHB, the most common races are humans, dwarves (hill and mountain), elves (high and wood), and halflings (lightfoot and stout). The other races (including drow elves) are far less common, and are likely to provoke reactions, ranging from curiosity (half-elves) to fear (tieflings).
Starting Gear All characters should use the starting gear packages for their background and class, not the "ala carte" option. Also, characters cannot spend their starting GP before play begins.
DM Note: I know this is limiting, but I like the idea that beginning characters start with the gear that is available to them and that they've managed to scrounge together, not necessarily the ideal gear for their build. If this is a major problem for anyone, we can discuss it. I'm also open to a character starting with additional pieces of gear for character/story reasons.
