THE SWORD COAST: GEOGRAPHY
The region known as the Sword Coast is in the northern reaches of the Savage Kingdoms. It gained its name due to both the rocky geography and the violent cultures to be found in it.
To the south it the Sword Coast is bounded by the Ironback Mountains. To the north it extends into the Icefire Mountains. To the east it merges into the Free Marches, beyond which lies the fabled Dragon Imperium. To the west is the great Ocean Sea.
The coast itself is rough and perilous, with the Ironback Mountains in the south and the Icefire Mountains in the north reaching into the sea, while the coast along the lowlands in-between is jagged and rocky. This has made it a haven for pirates, brigands, and other ne'er-do-wells who prey upon ships in the northern Ocean Sea and raid the coasts of the Grand Duchy of Arnd and the Kingdom of Colwynn to the south of the Ironback Mountains.
Inland, the Sword Coast is a mix of forested hills and hollows and rocky escarpments. There are a few scattered farming communities, but the soil is poor. Most common folk make their livings as loggers, hunters and trappers, or shepherds and goatherds. The Ironback Mountains and the hills of the region do have a number of valuable mineral deposits, but brigands and monsters love to prey on the wealth of the miners (and the miners themselves), so this is a particularly dangerous occupation.
The forests, hills, and forbidding mountains provide innumerable hide-outs, redoubts, and lairs for monsters, brigands, cultists, and warlords, making the Sword Coast a dangerous region - one in need of heroes.
