For various reasons, I'm having a lot of trouble sustaining the current campaign. However, several players have said they are really enjoying the game and their characters, so I don't want to simply scrap it. Instead, I'd like to suggest a reboot.
It even makes sense in-game: while everyone else is distracted, Hal enters the Godmaker's central chamber, activates the Precursor artifact, and creates a parallel reality...
The reboot game would be based largely on Pinnacle's new sci-fi setting, "The Last Parsec", with some alterations by me.
The premise is that the PCs are members of a JumpTeam - an elite group of explorers, investigators, and trouble-shooters, sent into the remotest reaches of the Galaxy by JumpCorp, the Galaxy's largest megacorp. JumpCorp has broad interests in virtually every sector of the interstellar economy and in virtually every significant system in the Galaxy. Its JumpTeams chart new systems, explore Precursor ruins, investigate strange anomolies, and even provide mundane research, investigation, and policing services for smaller and poorer systems.
The rebooted campaign frame will have a structure that is a lot easier for me to run, with specific missions and defined goals. On the other hand, JumpTeams have a lot of autonomy, operating on their own, out of contact with JumpCorp and the Known Worlds for weeks or months at a time, so players will have a lot of freedom of maneuver in how they accomplish the mission, what "side quests" they take on, and so on.
Players who want to keep their characters can do so. You will have the same number of XP, but you may have to make a couple of tweaks or a slight re-build to fit into the new campaign's character creation rules. Players who want to make a new character can also do so. The characters as they are just happen to fit almost perfectly into the standard roles of a JumpTeam.
John - due to the reboot, if you want, you can tweak Richard, probably into a JumpTeam Security Specialist, instead of making a whole new character.
The biggest difference for most characters will probably be in gear - one of the parts of the Science Fiction Companion that doesn't really work as presented is how characters acquire gear. Most characters will likely have less, and less powerful gear - at least to start. I'm also planning on handling gear acquisition in a much more structured manner.
I discussed this with Mike, Spence, and Chrystal last Tuesday, and they all seemed to like the idea. I'd like to get feedback from Movie Dave, Hanna, and John before making it official.
To be frank, I'm not going to continue running the current campaign. I just can't keep it going. But I have a lot of ideas about what do with the rebooted campaign, and it will be much easier for me to run. I want to run it.
On the other hand, I have several other campaign ideas I wouldn't mind running. I also wouldn't object to someone else running something if they have a campaign they want to try (I enjoy GMing a lot, but I rarely get to play).
So, Movie Dave, Hanna, John, please let me know. If everyone is on-board, next Tuesday we'll all sit down together to build your rebooted characters and play an intro session.
