Tales from the Yawning Portal will be an Old School game of dungeon crawling, using the 5th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons.
The core conceit of the campaign is that the PCs are dungeon crawling adventurers. They may be heroes, scholars, explorers, thrill-seekers, or greedy thieves - and probably a bit of all of the above. All characters should be ready, willing, and able to investigate tales of lost dungeons and seek them out wherever they may be, and then slay the monsters therein, and grab the loot. All characters should also be willing to adventure alongside an assortment of other adventurers, from any sort of race, creed, or background.
This will not be a campaign of epic quests to defeat an evil overlord. Your character might have this in mind as an endgoal, but in the meantime, you loot dungeons, hoping to find treasure to fund your quest, artifacts to battle the overlord, or clues to his secret weaknesses. It is up to you, the player, to create a suitable background that buys into the central conceit of the campaign.
That being said, the world is wide open and only fuzzily defined. As a player, you do not need to help create the world. However, if you want to, you can work with the DM and the other players to fill in and define the campaign world, to work in your background and goals.
For this campaign, we will be using the Tales from the Yawning Portal adventure book. Please do not read it or any spoilers for it. The book itself presents a series of classic dungeons from previous editions of D&D, updated to 5E. There's no particular link between the dungeons, but they roughly follow a level 1 - 10+ progression. The PCs will track down tales about these dungeons, and explore them, discover the secrets they hold, slay the foul monsters who lair in them, and claim the great treasures they contain.
