So, when I created the character, I had only a vague idea of a backstory, and not much sense of motivation. I knew he had left his tribe to come to Waterdeep and train with a dwarven mastersmith, but I didn't really have any ideas beyond this.
After a little more thought, and to try to fit him into the campaign, here's what I'm thinking (this takes some liberties with goliath lore, but they're not really integrated into Realmslore anyway, and I'm the only one in the campaign, so...)
Uthal "Goblinspear" Gathakanathi was a young goliath, whose most impressive accomplishment was spearing two goblins at once during a skirmish with a neighboring goblin tribe. Not much by goliath standards. Which was a problem, because he was in love with the daughter of the goliath chieftain-of-chieftains. And neither she nor her parents would accept such a lowly accomplishment as a suitable match. He needed some much more impressive.
Goliaths value force of arms, certainly, but also more practical concerns, like smithing. Many goliaths in his tribe were accomplished warriors, but few had much if any skills in smithing. Uthal Gathakanathi knew he had some real smithing talents, and he knew that becoming a mastersmith would be a truly unusual and noteworthy accomplishment. So, he packed his gear and set off for Waterdeep, the melting pot of the North, where he hoped to find an open-minded dwarven mastersmith willing to take him on as an apprentice.
He did, indeed, find a dwarven smithing guild in Waterdeep willing to accept him as an apprentice, and he spent over a year achieving the usename of "Irontamer". Being given such a name by dwarven smiths was certainly an accomplishment for a goliath...but not, he thought, enough to prove his worth to his love and her parents. So, he continues to search for something more.
Irontamer wants to continue honing his smithing skills, to produce a true masterwork, and earn a more significant usename. He also looks for other opportunities to earn a name. Slaying monsters, going on adventures, finding a legendary hoard...
As for a faction, there isn't really one that fits him. Order of the Gauntlet, maybe, but he wouldn't so much be interested in thwarting evil as slaying challenging monsters that happened to be evil.
