Ok, after some messaging and discussions, I think we have a potential Wednesday RPG group: me (Game Dave), Movie Dave, Jeff, Chrystal, and Nick and Julie.
Nick and Julie: Movie Dave, Jeff, and Chrystal are friends of mine that I've gamed with for years.
Movie Dave, Jeff, and Chrystal: Nick and Julie are a couple that I started gaming with (last year?) as part of a group with Derek. That group fell apart.
I have a proposal for a campaign: a D&D 5E campaign in the 13th Age Dragon Empire setting. This is a high fantasy, kinda gonzo setting based on D&D tropes and history.
I love the "half-built" Dragon Empire setting, which paints in broad strokes and leaves a lot of room for creativity and improvisation by the GM and players. However, the 13 Age system is...interesting, but it has a lot of fiddly bits I don't particularly care for. But, I think the 5E rules set, with some tweaks, works in the setting perfectly well (as it should, given that 13th Age is explicitly trying to create a certain kind of D&D-style experience).
This would be a higher-powered game than a "standard" 5E game. But it also involves a lot of pre-built roleplaying hooks, in particular the Icons. I'd be borrowing some concepts from 13th Age in dealing with the Icons, but not porting those rules exactly.
In my proposed campaign, every character would have a relationship with one Icon, which could be Positive, Conflicted, or Negative. This relationship (probably) isn't actually a direct, personal relationship, but a relationship with the Icon's organization, followers, goals, and, for that matter, the Icon's rivals and enemies. A valiant paladin, for example, might typically have a Positive relationship with the Great Gold Wyrm, or a Negative relationship with the Diabolist.
But, some very interesting stories could be told with a Lawful Good Paladin of Devotion who has a Negative relationship with the Great Gold Wyrm or a Positive relationship with the Diabolist...
All of this is just one option, though. If anyone has a campaign they're eager to run, by all means, propose it.
One stumbling block would be where to meet. My house would be a long drive for a 4/6 of this group, and I currently have a houseguest with pets that makes using my place difficult. Movie Dave, and Nick and Julie, have places that could be used, but I don't want to volunteer either as hosts, especially since either way about half the group would be strangers.
Thoughts?
