It's been roughly two weeks since the destruction of the Death Star. The various rebel cells coming together to retrieve the plans (Rogue One) and, ultimately, destroy the battle station (A New Hope) were a galvanizing moment, and the birth of the true Rebel Alliance. But that Alliance is still tenuous, made up of many small cells and groups trying to come together as a cohesive fighting force. Worse, the Empire is not happy with the destruction of the Death Star and have committed to hunting down the Rebels on a scale never before seen.
The characters are all part of the Rebellion. You are currently aboard a Corellian Corvette named the Antares. It is captained by a man named Reichon who, until recent events, has been in charge of a well-funded Rebel cell based just outside the Core worlds. The Rebels have abandoned the base on Yavin 4 as well as many other cell locations that have been uncovered by the Empire. The Alliance is bringing together supplies and personnel to construct a new base to serve as Rebel headquarters. The Antares is part of that effort.
You might be part of the Antares' original crew under Captain Reichon. Or, you might be one of the many members of various Rebel cells hitching a ride. You might even be a new convert to the Rebel Alliance in the wake of the destruction of Alderaan. I do need one person to volunteer to have been associated with the Massassi Group (one of the larger Rebel groups that existed before Yavin 4). Whatever the reason, you are aboard the Antares when the game opens. You are also seen as someone more than the common crew. Perhaps it's you're unique experience. Perhaps it's your skill in battle or some other area of war. Perhaps it's your amazing diplomatic skills. Whatever the reason, you are afforded a bit more respect (and personal space) than the rank and file. You are, in short, the heroes.
You can know each other or not. It's not really relevant at the start of the first session. But, you must all dislike the Empire and wholeheartedly support the idea of rebellion against it. This doesn't mean that you support every possible tactic wholesale, but in general, you believe the Empire is evil and must be overthrown.
