Chapter 1: Awakening
The heroes' dreams are haunted by nightmares that are blurred images of the Battle of Bal'Barath and the shockwave of the Negabomb. Although the heroes aren't certain what these images are of due to their mind wipes, they feel a strong and persistent connection to the events. They also hear a clear and steady voice, the only sound overlapping the violence and mayhem of the battle in their dreams-
"Do you Remember?" It asks.
When the heroes awake, their current reality returns to focus. They are commanders in the Global Alliance, powerful metahumans who champion the cause of the Overlord in overthrowing the corrupt governments of the world and replacing them with a new and ideal empire. Their nightmares become murky afterthoughts as they are saluted by the various GAG (Global Alliance Garrison) soldiers that they lead.
The heroes are summoned and receive information for their newest mission. A high ranking UN officer, Warminister Davenport, has been found leading his army from a secret and reinforced bunker not far from the ruins of New York. Intel suggests he is being protected by a UN sanctioned metahuman, codename Captain Freedom, a formidable super being with the ability to generate high frequency sound waves. The heroes are reminded of the true importance of this mission- not only for the defeat of Davenport, who has been a tactical thorn in the GA's side, but for the slaying of Captain Freedom who is responsible for killing one of the Overlord's Archon Generals known as Shard. The Global Alliance is sending their best.
Before departing, Ascension the cybernetic Gorilla, goes to speak with his creator and "Father." Dr Mukla, a super intelligent chimp, was once a hero and a member of the Redeemers before the Fall. His codename was Tin Man, due to a suit of hypertech armor he wore to disguise himself as a human. Ascension is troubled by his recurring nightmares and wonders if his Father can give council. With some reluctance and a look of sadness in his small eyes, Dr Mukla does his best to reconfirm Ascension's faith in the Overlord and the goals of the Global Alliance. He tells the Gorilla to think nothing more of silly dreams and trust instead in purpose. With that, Ascension leaves to prepare himself for the attack on the bunker and Mukla frowns before returning to his work on upgrading the deadly Reavers.
The heroes gear up and prepare themselves for the assault. After getting into uniform, checking weapons and systems, the champions make their way to a Voidwalker ship. From their they are put into stasis chambers filled with Immulsion, a strange amber liquid used to nullify the presence of the Atlantian metagene. It is rumored that such a gene is what attracts the fiends of the Void when traveling through. After the heroes are placed in stasis the ship departs, the skilled pilots carefully traversing the shadow paths of the Void to make their way to the target.
Given time to shake off the effects of the Immulsion, the heroes ready themselves for the ambush. The Voidwalker bursts from a tear in the night sky, pulling behind tendrils of shadow and energy as it leaves the Void behind. Surprised UN soldiers rush to gun platforms or rally their weapons. Stealthed Shadow Tanks drop their cloaking fields and fire their heavy munitions at the hovering ship. The heroes disembark...the Voidwalker heads for a safe place to wait.
Spartan lands with ease on the dew slick grass, dropping several of the soldiers with clean head shots and shouting out a battle cry to bolster his team. Magnus, with a protective field about him, hovers arrogantly in the air and tears gun platforms apart with a gesture of his hand. Ice, taking form, freezes the enemy weapons rendering them useless as Ascensions energy cannons lay them low. The symbiotic Synergy carves the barrel off one of the Tank's guns with his organic blades and the mysterious Shadow opens small portals in the Void just in front of the second Tank's booming cannon, swallowing the shell whole and sending it to Legion's war torn realm.
It doesn't take long for Captain Freedom to show himself.
The metahuman arrives dressed in the red, white and blue of the States, a flowing cape billowing out behind him. With a smirk he declares- "Let Freedom Ring!" His first shock wave sends Magnus tumbling from the sky, a second sends Ascension sprawling. Within moments, the battle turns. Spartan's shots keep the UN Hero dodging frantically while Ice's blast weighs the man's legs down with heavy frost. Trying to avoid the waves of deadly ranged attacks and burdened by the weight, Captain Freedom flies too low...his final mistake. With a snarl, Synergy leaps high into the air snagging the Captain's majestic cape and pulling him crashing down to the ground. Stunned from the fall, Captain Freedom doesn't lift much more than an arm to defend himself and Synergy eviscerates him where he lays.
Meanwhile, with the Tanks destroyed by Magnus' metal control, and the soldiers all killed by Spartan, Ascension and Ice, the battle is coming to an end. Shadow stealths into the bunker and finds Warminister Davenport sitting in a chair at a communications terminal with his face in his hands. Somehow, he hears the stealthy shadow rogue enter. He explains that the battle he was just overseeing from the safety of the bunker is over as well- the surprise and ferocity of the Global Alliance has won the field again. He knows why Shadow is here and assumes that Captain Freedom and his security force above must be defeated as well. He asks if Shadow will allow him to take his own life, when the metahuman agrees, the Warminister takes an ornate pistol from a box on his desk and shoots himself in the head.
With the battle won, the heroes leave to find the landed Voidwalker. They board, relishing their victory, and return to their stasis chambers. Just as the Voidwalker is taking off and the amber colored Illullsion is surronding them and blurring their vision, they see the Captain and crew of the ship killed by random energy blasts. Then a figure in a black coat and a smirk on his face taps on the nearest stasis chamber and speaks-
"Filch, you've really hit the jackpot this time."
