Notable hang-outs near the UCSA campus:
The Underground
The most popular coffee shop near campus, the Underground is located a walk-down basement under Sandlin's Books, Santa Angela's largest used book store. It serves a variety of coffees from around the world, as well as the House Special, a.k.a. the Grad Student's Nectar, an extremely strong, thick, and surprisingly cheap roast. It also serves a full menu of snacks and sandwiches. It also has a small performance space, which is occasionally used for poetry slams, folk music, and other small-scale, alternative performances.
Pulaski's Pizza
One of the two main off-campus pizzeria's, Pulaski's features the best Chicago-style deep dish in California, as well as a variety of Polish and Italian dishes. It is also well-regarded on campus for its "liberal" carding policy, less so for the proprietor's uncanny ability to cut anyone off before they actually become drunk. It's a great place to go for a beer and a pizza, not for getting sloshed.
The Pizza Lab
The other main off-campus pizzeria, the Pizza Lab serves a bewildering variety of California-style, "fusion" cuisine pizzas. Virtually any sort of pizza one can imagine can be found on the menu, and the staff is more than willing to experiment with special orders. Unlike Pulaski's, the Pizza Lab doesn't serve alcohol, or even regular sodas, instead offering a variety of "world cuisine" juices and drinks.
The Hanger
Located on a decommissioned Air Force base just off campus, the Hanger is a multi-story dance club built in a converted aircraft hanger. The Hanger caters to the college crowd, and features a wide variety of local bands which rotate throughout the night, with occasional appearances (often unannounced) by major touring groups.
