In the sword & sorcery genre, magic is rare, subtle, and mysterious. No fireballs. Also, deities, if they even truly exist, are remote, and rarely intervene in mortal affairs. The few "gods" that clearly exist are generally demons, powerful mortal sorcerers, or alien intelligences from beyond the fixed stars, masquerading as divine beings. Primal spirits are in genre, but the kinds of powers and abilities that most primal characters possess are rather too flashy for the genre.
Thus, in S&S 4E, there are no arcane, divine, or primal characters. The only power source available to characters is martial power. Unlike other primal characters, the barbarian's abilities fit into the genre fairly well (and the barbarian is, of course, an iconic archetype of the genre), so the barbarian is re-classified as a martial character.
