To better reflect the genre, the following changes are made to AC, armor, and shields.
AC is Armed Combat defense, not Armor Class. It is equal to your best ability score modifier (rather than the best of your Dexterity or Intelligence modifier) plus one-half your level.
Armor does not provide an AC bonus. Instead, armor provides resistance to all damage against attacks that target AC.
Leather = DR 1 Hide = DR 2 Chain = DR 3 Scale = DR 4 Plate = DR 5
Armor is confining and restrictive. Armor inflicts an armor check penalty equal to its DR to all Constitution, Dexterity, and Strength based ability and skill checks. Heavy armor (chain, scale, and plate) also reduces speed by 1. In addition, if you wear armor you're not proficient with, the armor check penalty increases by 2, and you take a -2 penalty to attack rolls and Reflex defense.
Shields are unchanged.
