Based on a d20 Modern setting.
Synopsis: Reality may seem to be the mundane, everyday world, but horrors lurk in the Shadows. The gang of feral children - are really goblins. The hulking homeless man living under the bridge - is really a troll. The menacing dog in front of the decrepit house - is really a hell hound. The televangelist who has rapidly risen to political prominence - is really a mind flayer. The characters are men and women gifted with Shadow Sight - the ability to see through the Shadow that veils the perceptions of others, fighting a desperate secret battle against the evils that prey on the unsuspecting mundane world.
The key concepts of the campaign:
1. Monsters exist.
2. Shadow obscures.
3. A handful of people can see the truth.
Characters may be ordinary people, who only recently gained Shadow Sight, and fear they may be going crazy. They may be mediums or psychics, who have had the Sight ever since they can remember, but who have only recently decided to take up arms against the darkness. Or they may be the scions of a long line of Shadow Warriors, only the latest to fight the good fight and protect a world of the blind.
Tone: Investigative horror mixed with high-action adventure and occasional humor and romance.
System: Savage Worlds, with some tweaks (notably rules for Shadow Sight).
Sources: D20 Modern (RPG), Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural (TV series and RPGs), urban fantasy fiction, particularly the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, the works of Neil Gaiman (American Gods, Neverwhere, Sandman, et al.), the Keeper series by Tonya Huff, the "Elves on the Road" books by Mercedes Lackey (the Bedlam's Bard, Diana Tregarde, and SERRAted Edge series), the Godmother series by Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, and Thermasilk commercials (I kid you not - there are few, if any, better visuals of the fantastic lurking under the surface of everyday life).
