Preface:In discussions of the upcoming MACE convention, several folks have said they plan to bring games to play with the Wilmington game gang. Others have said they're looking forward to MACE as an opportunity to spend time with members of the Wilmington game gang they don't get to see very often. So, we're going to be driving from Wilmington to Charlotte, in order to play games that we own with other people from Wilmington.
Proposal: We should hold a "micro-con" for our gaming group here in Wilmington. We should take a weekend, find a space, get together as many members of our extended group as possible, and just hang out and play some games. As with any con, people should be able to come and go as they please, spend as little or as much time as they want, and have a lot of options, as well as plenty of space for games both big and small, and possibly several at the same time.
Details: I think we'd want a semi-public venue for this, but we don't need a whole convention hall just for our group.
I've made preliminary contact with Cape Fear Games; I've been told it might be possible to rent out the whole back area for an entire weekend, but not until at least January. This seems like a good fit to me - it's a big enough space for our group to run a few games simultaneously, with plenty of room for the bigger minis games. It's (to me) the ideal balance of semi-public - it's open for anyone to come and go and doesn't invade anyone's privacy, but at the same time random people aren't likely to just wander in. It's got snacks readily available. It's a space specifically designed for gaming. And it's cheap (the going rate is $5/hour per space - we'd be renting all three, so $15/hour - and that's all store credit, so it's effectively free for folks like me who spend a lot at CFG anyway).
The main downside is that we'd have to work around the store's schedule, so no all night gaming, or early morning sessions. Also, we'd have to work around the store's availability, and trying to get the whole space for a whole weekend might be a problem.
We could also look at renting out a single banquet hall at a hotel or similar venue. That would work much better for scheduling, but would be a LOT more expensive.
There may be other options as well.
Thoughts?
